Miki Dora - Duke Contest -
1967
Bill took this photograph at Sunset Beach
in Val's front yard. Dora was one of 24
contestants. Here he is watching others riding just before
engaging in conversation with Bill for several hours. They
talked about Delaware's whipping post and gallows which Miki thought
were "archaic." Miki was fascinated with Bill's method of surf
photography in spite of paralyzed hands. Just before they
parted Miki tossed the red Duke contest jacket he was
wearing into Bill's lap, saying, " I want you to have this. You
deserve it." Bill never saw Dora again.
"He's probably the most notable California surfer in the history
of the sport." said Steve Pezman, publisher of the Surfer's
Journal. - from Dora's Los Angeles Times obituary - January
2002 "Brief
Encounter," the complete story of this Miki
Dora meeting, written by Bill, was published 32 years
later in The Surfer's Journal - Volume
8 #4 - Winter 1999
